A brief listen to Kendrick Lamar’s music makes it obvious that the Compton rapper is well aware of the negative way that bad politics has affected cities like his hometown, but during a recent interview with Truth Is Scary via WSHH, K Dot still surprised us by admitting that he’s not into voting and has no plans to vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming election.
“My vote counts? I don’t do no voting. I will keep it straight up real with you. I don’t believe in none of the shit that’s going on in the world,” Kendrick said matter-of-factly. “You talk with me, you talk with me for hours because everything has a contradiction, everything is higher ranking and way beyond us, way beyond people. So basically, do what you do, do good with your people and live your life because what’s going on isn’t really in our hands.”
Elaborating further on his reasons for not voting, Kendrick added, “When I say the president can’t even control the world, then you definitely know there’s something else out there pushing the buttons. They could do whatever they want to do, we all puppets. Just play your cards right.”
Kendrick isn’t the first rapper to take this stance, he and Lupe Fiasco might find that they have a few things in common. The Black Hippy rapper’s major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city is due in October.
