A man was killed and his step-son hospitalized after an explosion at a Buford paving company on Thursday.
The incident happened at Flintstone Pavers on Buford Dam Road around 10 a.m.
The explosion was followed by a flash fire, according to firefighters on the scene.
Gwinnett County Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge told Channel 2 Action News reporter Manuel Bojorquez that it appears a man in his 60s was working on a car when the explosion happened, away from the vehicle.
The second victim, the man’s stepson, tried to extinguish the flames and suffered minor burns.
The older victim was airlifted the Grady Memorial Hospital with second- and third-degree burns over much of his body. Fire officials told Channel 2 he died late Thursday.
Investigators are trying to find out what caused the explosion.
No one at the business was available for comment.
